Hi all!
After comparing both the frameworks, I'd like to go for eating the Cake. As It's suitable for building up large applications in a short time. Of course it's somehow harder to learn, but as it has very strong community of users, Anybody can easily find the help.

Exciting article. I would like to go with cakePHP. No doubt, CI is easy to learn and rock you in a day. But cakePHP is close to RubyOnRails and working on cakePHP will make you more closer to ROR. This way you will be comfortable with ROR also.

<blockquote>If you want to build a more complex application where a MVC design is necessary, then you will want to use CakePHP.</blockquote>

I have used both frameworks extensively and I am a CI fan, through and through.

I just wanted to expound on the quote above - you could always just develop your application, in CI, with MVC in mind. CI does not prevent you from following the MVC design pattern it merely allows you to (by omitting the model). It's still up to you, the developer, how you approach it.

Personally, I have an extended model class I use on all projects that implements a "proper" model similar to CakePHP, RoR, Akelos.

Well written. I haven't tested either of the frameworks, but I am definitely sure I'll use one of those for my next project. The projects is quite complex and after reading your comparsion I think i'll go for CakePHP. I have checked some of the tutorials and I really like how easy Cake makes it to implement web2.0 features using the AJAX helper.

Well I wonder why guys think cake is better than CI. I think if you want flexibility and u want speed then u will be using code igniter it doesnt tie you down. why do u think every body will learn code igniter before cake php, and if everybody does then which do u think is better. is like tellin me .NET or java, which is better ?? .NET better documentation, less robust and runs faster , java not good enough documentation and much slower, but much more robust with a bigger community ??? if you look kinely .NET is faring more that java nowadays so just give CI some time it will fare more than cake. I personally prefer CI due to its speed and flexibility, in CI I can write my own SQL from scratch and with some contributions I can use the database abstraction cake is having :D

I've played with both CI and cakePHP... I'm impressed by both, but at the end of the day, I can see why some people would pick CI over Cake... Documentation is key and CI's user guide is pretty well written, despite it not being in (my preferred) *docs style...

cakePHP is powerful (and I know that I'll be using that for one of my projects) but if you're in a pinch (be it time, resources, whatever...) the quite honestly, there's no reason why one shouldn't use CI.

While it is true that CI isn't entirely true-blue to the MVC/CRUD, at the end of the day, it does render a result... as for database abstraction, give it some time... Something tells me that will be addressed soon enough.

Either or, using one or the other beats making your own framework or helper classes... I did that for four years and regardless of which tool I pick for a project, as long as you're moving forward, that's all that matters ;)

So far I guess with my little experience, cakePHP is much better if you working in a big application with multi-developer environment. But it takes huge (3-7days) time to know.

On the Other hand, CI is the greatest framework for a small application with a single programmer. It is huge comfortable and takes only a single day to know.

So decision is yours!

ci and cake are similar in so many ways.

it all come down to

"Automagic" vs "Compact"

i would say they are both very lightweight in their own rights/class, they are arguably in different class.

yes, i towards cake more, more damage in the hands of right person.

"lightweight camp" vs "middleweight camp" any one?

I haven't used CodeIgniter although I'm certainly intrigued. I been working hard at Cake lately - I'm just working on my 4th site - and its only now - after a lot of hard work that I'm starting to feel really comfortable with it.

It is a big framework and there is a lot to understand before you can get really productive I think. You have the basis there but there is still a lot you will need to write. A lot of Cake is great but other bits drive me to depair, but the documentation and Groups are very active.

If you can afford to give it a bit of time I'd say give Cake a chance, it's ceratinly made me think about the way I work and made me a better programmer.
